About the Department

The Department of Biotechnology made a modest beginning in 2008 with the commencement of B.Sc Biotechnology Course. Since then department is working continuously with upgraded knowledge and technical base. The backbone of the department is the intellectual rigor provided by a dedicated faculty and students coming from all across the country.

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science which encompasses areas viz. Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Virology, Plant and Animal tissue culture, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Recombinant DNA Technology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Food and Pharmaceuticals, Bioinformatics, IPR and Patenting. It is a fast emerging science with distinctive advantages as it finds applications in practically all aspects of life. The subject offers exciting opportunities in various fields from basic research to an industry oriented career.

Keeping in view expense and applications of biotechnology, in every field there is going to be a perpetual demand for resource personnel with biotechnology as specialization. Taking the increasing demand of the subject onto consideration, department faculty groom students and make them ready to excel their futuristic challenges. Very excellent academic ambience in the department always works for all round development of students. Department always plans for imparting quality education through research and technology based approaches.

Qualified and experience faculty of the department is always student oriented and tries to give them maximum exposure to experts in field for better carries achievements.

Department always provide extensive hands on training to students to make it more relevant to the current scenario in Industry and Research field so as to provide an edge at both National and Global level.

Department faculty is involved in research areas like Microbiology, Immunology, Plant and Animal Biotechnology, Molecular Biology with Publications in National and International Journals.

Department have its own allotted classroom with well aided facilities like LCD and OHP.

Laboratories

There are 4 state of the art laboratories viz

Biotechnology Laboratory

Biotechnology Laboratory is fully equipped with all the basic facilities to carry out practicals of Microbiology like, Shaker incubator, LAF, centrifuge, autoclave, hot air oven etc. and other biotechnology related practical too.

Molecular biology laboratory

Molecular biology laboratory has all the instruments and equipment's like PCR machine, Gel doc, electrophoretic units, -20 refrigerator, Cooling centrifuge, Magnetic stirrers, transilluminator, dual beam spectrophotometer to name a few, to carry out basic research work too.

Animal tissue culture laboratory

Animal tissue culture laboratory is designed as per small size lab scientific plan with fully air conditioned and UV sterilization facilitated subareas like data collection room and culture room which has equipments like Water jacketed CO2 incubator , LAF and inverted microscope .

Plant tissue culture laboratory

Plant tissue culture laboratory is designed as per small size scientific plan with fully air conditioned and UV sterilization facilitated sub-areas like data collection room, Transfer room and culture/ Incubation room with equipments like LAF, orbital shaker, magnetic stirrer, filter assembly and automatic operating Growth racks for culturing purpose.

Note : There's common washing area too for tissue culturing purpose with water supply, autoclave, hot air oven, double distillation unit, ice flaker machine, drying racks etc.

Lecture Series-“ Frontiers of Biotechnology”

On completion of 80 glorious years to the college, Dept of Biotechnology organised two days lecture series entitled “Frontiers of Biotechnology”. This event was inaugurated by Dr. Mrs. S. R. Chaphalkar ,Director, VSBT, Baramati. In lecture series lectures were taken by imminent faculties from industry and academia.

Extra credit certificate course-“ Frontiers of Biotechnology”

Department of Biotechnology organized extra credit certificate course entitled “Frontiers of Biotechnology” from 13 December 2021 to 26 December 2021 for the T .Y. B.Sc. Biotechnology students. 6 guest lectures and 4 practicals conducted by eminent faculties from different fields of 30 hours were conducted under this. Students gain 3 credits by attending the course.

Student events “Biotechcellence 2K ’’

Student events “Biotechcellence 2K ’’an inter-collegiate Competition get organised by department every year with over whelming responses over 100 participants from various Colleges in and around Pune city participated in various events like model making ,poster making, Petri Dish art, Bioryhthm, photography and Quiz Competition and received several Prizes

“Avishkar’’

“Avishkar’’ an extention activity carried out by the department every year. Biotechnology students participated in ‘Avishkar’, project Competition organised by Savitribai Phule Pune University to get hands on research experience. Many students won prizes in this competition at college level, zonal level and Represented Pune university at state level

Biotech Bulletin activity

Biotech Bulletin activity carried out by students under the guidance of teacher for every month to get latest news and research.

Department of Biotechnology organises guest lectures, practical, seminar, short film for B.Sc. Biotechnology students. The aim of organising such events is to get exposure to the experts from different fields, getting knowledge from them which could be helpful to students for future prospective.

  • A guest lecture on Ebola virus by Dr. Gajanan Sapkal, Head diagnostic virology group, NIV, Pune

  • Guest lecture by Dr.Smita Zinzarde, Prof, IBB, Pune on Environmental applications of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

  • Guest lecture entitled “Intellectual Property Rights”(IPRs) by Ms.Samata Gupta

  • Guest lecture entitle “Introduction to clinical research and job opportunities” by Dr. Vaibhav Patil ,Project Manager , Biocon, Pune along with Mitcon

  • Guest lecture by Dr. Abhinav Kumar, Thinking place, Pune on Career advances in Biotechnology.

  • Guest lecture on Awareness training on ISO/IEC 17025 and Laboratory management system by Rasna Jaiswal Director of Biz luris Consulting Pvt.Ltd., Bhosari, Pune

  • Department has organised a guest practical entitled “Demonstration of regeneration of Hydra” under the guidance of Ms.Rohini Londhe from ARI Pune

  • Seminar

  • Seminar on Career Avenues in food industry by Ms. Meghana Patange, (Academic Co-ordinator and Manager Administration, Careerversity), Pune

  • Short film

  • Short film entitled ‘Genetically Modified food & Environmental impact’ was organised for students, & staff of the college in collaboration with ‘Lokayat’ on social activist groups in Pune. Dr. Neeraj Jain & Mr. Rushal Thaker from ‘Lokayat’ interacted with the students after short film presentation.

  • Study tour

  • As per the syllabus of SPPU, Students of Biotechnology visited Hyderabad University, Goa University, BITS Pillani University, University of Mysore, Central Food Technological Research Institute of India (CFTRI) Coonoor .Pasture Institute, Coonoor, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat University, Government Institute of Science at Aurangabad. Because of visit they could be able to see the well equipped labs , research work and interacted with the scientist in the university

  • Students also visited AMUL Dairy, Anand, Gujarat, Katraj Dairy, Pune, Sonai Dairy ,Indapur along with teaching and non teaching staff members to study dairy Biotechnology.

  • To study the fermentation processes they visited Wine park at Nashik, Nira Valley Wines PVt. Ltd, Baramati, Four seasons winery at Baramati to get an explosure to large scale industry.Study tour included training program, visit to vineyards and interaction with owners and wine makers.

  • T. Y. students attended training program on GC and HPLC at the Department of chemistry, SPPU, Pune and Visited K .F .Bioplants Pvt.Ltd,Manjari,Pune to see large scale production of in vitro cultivation

  • For Ecosystem and biodiversity studies students visited Dandeli, Karnataka, Pashan lake, Empress Garden, Malavali, ARAI Hill, Pune.
