In India, the late Rajiv Gandhi, who was Prime Minister developed separate Departments of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Modern Education Society’s Nowrosjee Wadia College started a separate Biotechnology Department under the science Stream in 2007. Department of Biotechnology, Nowrosjee Wadia College runs both UG and PG programs under the National Education Policy -20220 (NEP-2020). The Syllabus of UG and PG is defined in such a manner that the holistic development of students is integrated. The Biotechnology Department emphasizes research and development; developing soft skills in humans as a resource towards national development.
We always say that for Biotechnology the sky is the limit because of its integrity in different disciplines such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Plant sciences, and Animal sciences, which opens the door for the immense potential for the benefit of humankind directly and indirectly. Nowrosjee Wadia College divots wholly to archives excellence in promotions in the Biotechnology Department.
Under the umbrella of Biotechnology, we offer different courses such as Fundamentals of Microbiology & Biotechnology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Fundamentals of Animal and Plant Sciences, Animal & Plant Development, Environment Science, rDNA Technology, Plant and Animal Tissue Cultures, Industrial Microbiology, Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Genetics, Immunology. Advanced Biochemistry, Biostatics, Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering, Forensic Biotechnology, Virology and Toxicology, Pathology, Research Methodology etc. Along with these students are permitted for OJT/FP (On Job Training or field Projects) in different renowned sectors of Government, Semi Government. Private Industries. Research projects were integrated into their UG and PG syllabi. The Research Projects, Internships, and On Job training integrated into UG and PG syllabi provide a platform for job opportunities.
A departmental program is a tie-up with other disciplines for an interdisciplinary approach. Minors, Open Electives (OE), and the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Ability Enhancement courses (AEC), Vocational Sill Enhancement Courses (VSEC) Cocurricular Activities (CC) from the same or other faculty are part of their curriculum. This will boost the student's mind towards success.

On completion of 80 glorious years to the college, Dept of Biotechnology organised two days lecture series entitled “Frontiers of Biotechnology”. This event was inaugurated by Dr. Mrs. S. R. Chaphalkar ,Director, VSBT, Baramati. In lecture series lectures were taken by imminent faculties from industry and academia.
Department of Biotechnology organized extra credit certificate course entitled “Frontiers of Biotechnology” from 13 December 2021 to 26 December 2021 for the T .Y. B.Sc. Biotechnology students. 6 guest lectures and 4 practicals conducted by eminent faculties from different fields of 30 hours were conducted under this. Students gain 3 credits by attending the course.
Student events “Biotechcellence 2K ’’an inter-collegiate Competition get organised by department every year with over whelming responses over 100 participants from various Colleges in and around Pune city participated in various events like model making ,poster making, Petri Dish art, Bioryhthm, photography and Quiz Competition and received several Prizes
“Avishkar’’ an extention activity carried out by the department every year. Biotechnology students participated in ‘Avishkar’, project Competition organised by Savitribai Phule Pune University to get hands on research experience. Many students won prizes in this competition at college level, zonal level and Represented Pune university at state level
Biotech Bulletin activity carried out by students under the guidance of teacher for every month to get latest news and research.
Department of Biotechnology organises guest lectures, practical, seminar, short film for B.Sc. Biotechnology students. The aim of organising such events is to get exposure to the experts from different fields, getting knowledge from them which could be helpful to students for future prospective.
