Department of Physics

About the Department

The Department of Physics, Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune, is a SPPU recognized postgraduate teaching and research centre. It offers BSc, MSc and PhD degree programs at present. The Electro-Acoustics Research Laboratory (EARL) at the department has been an SPPU recognized research centre for MPhil and PhD programs since 1974.

The department now also offers opportunities in Materials Science research. The Advanced Functional Materials Laboratory (AFML) offers research opportunities in nanomaterials and functional thin films centred around conductive and transient properties vital to thin film device technology.

The centre has produced several PhDs and MPhils to date and has a number of candidates registered for PhD at present. The department has received grants from the APS, UGC, BCUD-UoP, and DST.

Highlights of the department

The department has highly qualified, experienced faculty members and excellent infrastructure and research facilities."

  • The three undergraduate laboratories are spread over an area of 3250 ft2, and the postgraduate laboratory is 900 ft2.
  • The research facilities available at the centre include a 500 ft2 Electro-Acoustics Research Laboratory (EARL) - separate from the other labs that houses the acoustic transducer testing and calibration suites, data acquisition equipment for building and room acoustics, instrumentation for acoustic impedance, reverberation, and transverse vibration characterization.
  • In addition, the Lab comprises equipment like Digital and multimedia storage oscilloscopes, programmable waveform generators, multimedia amplifiers, amplifier booster, timer-scalar-counter; audio oscillators, power supplies, function generators; effects processor, a wide range of loudspeakers and microphones, etc.
  • The Advance Functional Materials Lab (AFML) occupies 250 ft2 in the postgraduate building and includes a two-zone high-temperature tube furnace (1200 degrees), vacuum oven (250 degrees), programmable spin coater NT6000 V1, Medico C-852 centrifuge; autoclave, and an indigenously built spray pyrolysis unit.
  • The characterization equipment includes ultra-sensitive digital source meter, Keithley KickStart software for automated I-V characterization, Holmarc XYZ tilt arm manipulator and a high-resolution CCS."
