About the Department

Established in 1932, the Department of History at Nowrosjee Wadia College has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and intellectual inquiry. The department focuses on cultivating critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of historical processes across local, national, and global contexts.

It offers a well-structured curriculum that encourages students to engage with diverse sources, interpret historical evidence, and develop independent perspectives. Emphasis is placed on historiography, research methodology, and interdisciplinary learning, enabling students to connect the past with contemporary issues.

The department also promotes active learning through seminars, workshops, field visits, and heritage studies, giving students practical exposure beyond the classroom. Department Highlights

Our Department has a rich legacy, shaped by distinguished historians who have served as Heads of the Department and made significant academic contributions:

📚 Principal R. D. Choksey authored an important series on the Economic History of India.

📚 Dr. Kamal Gokhale wrote the renowned book “Shivaputra Sambhaji.”

📚 Dr. Samita Gupta is known for her respected work “Pune – The Queen of Deccan.”

📚 Principal S. B. Tardalkar co-authored notable works such as Nagpurchi Dhamm-kranti, Mahad cha Mukti-Sangram, Ghanshyam Talwatkar Vichardarshan, and Justice R. R. Bhole – Jivankarya.

✨ The current faculty members proudly continue this strong academic tradition.

📖 Dr. Jyoti S. Aniruddha specializes in the Social Movements of Maharashtra and completed her PhD on “The Emancipatory Movement of the Untouchables in Pune District (1906–1956).”

📖 Dr. Pramila Dasture authored “Thorough – The Bishop’s Saga,” released on 20th July 2018. She was the sole researcher behind the archival project on the history of The Bishop’s School, a prominent British-era institution that recently celebrated 150 years.

📝 Faculty members are actively engaged in research and have published numerous academic papers.

🎓 Former Heads of the Department, Dr. R. D. Choksey and Prof. S. B. Tardalkar, also served as Principals of Nowrosjee Wadia College.

🎓 Former faculty member Prof. Nandkumar Nikam retired as the Principal of Shirur College.

Prof. Akash Rakhunde received a Special Award for exemplary dedication and outstanding support in college administrative work.

The Department successfully organised special Guest lectures by eminent speakers :

  • “The Heritage of India and Career Opportunities” by Mr. BhujangBobade, Director, Heritage Foundation Jalgaon.

  • “The Hidden Heritage of India” by Mr. Arjun Kumar, Brand Manager, TOI & Member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. (Alumni NWC)

  • “Heritage Amidst the Dacoits” by Mr. Arjun Kumar, Brand Manager TOI & Member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.

  • History through the Medium Of Art which was conducted through the medium of exhibitions and competitions.

  • Annual field trips are conducted to the places of Historical Interests.

  • Heritage Walks through the City of Pune is organized annually.

  • The Department conducts a 10 Day Annual Workshop on the learning of the medieval Maratha Script Modi.

  • The Annual Department fests garners much response from the Students and the faculty.

  • The History Department’s popular ‘Treasure Hunt’ is based on themes from specific eras of History with the aim of generating a sense of interest in history whilst making it a fun challenge.

  • The Department attempts to bring each ingredient into as many student experiences as we can. The Department has had an illustrious faculty and many areas of Indian History have been defined by the researches done by them.
