About the Department-

The Department of Geology was established in the year 1938, when it became one of the very few colleges in the country to offer the subject. Geology was introduced at F.Y.B.Sc. and S.Y.B.Sc. level in 1938 and later as a major subject for T.Y.B.Sc. in 1952.

The global oil industry, particularly in India, has experienced significant growth since the 1970s, driven by a surge in demand for petroleum products. Recent government policies have opened up state-run industries to the private sector, attracting foreign direct investment. This shift has increased the demand for skilled workers in the petroleum sector. Recognizing this need, the Department of Geology at Nowrosjee Wadia College in Pune introduced a Post-Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology in 1987, which became a two-year postgraduate program in 1989.

The institution was established with the goal of becoming a leading provider of quality education to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the petroleum industry, particularly for field and laboratory operations. Since the 1970s, India's oil industry has experienced significant growth across exploration and exploitation sectors. The Asia Pacific region is projected to see a 50% rise in gas demand by 2021-2025. As petroleum product demand increases, there is a heightened need for more efficient methods of hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation. This demand has led the government to open the sector to private competition, further emphasizing the need for trained personnel.

The Department of Geology at Nowrosjee Wadia College recognized the need for specialized geology-based knowledge in the petroleum industry and launched an interdisciplinary Applied Petroleum Technology course in 1987. Following its initial success and positive industry feedback, the course was expanded in 1989 to a two-year Post-graduate Degree in Petroleum Technology. Since then, over thirty batches have successfully graduated.

The M.Sc. (Applied) Petroleum Technology degree, affiliated with the University of Pune, combines technology and geology, which is the core of the course. The program has received strong demand, with successful student placements in oil and petroleum service companies worldwide. It is now recognized by the UGC and ONGC for student employment opportunities.

The Department has had a recognized Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter since 2015. SPE is a global, non-profit professional association with over 124,800 members in 134 countries, focused on oil and gas exploration and production. The student chapter organizes various activities to complement formal education and promote professional development by connecting students with industry experts.

The department offers around 300 textbooks and reference books on Geology and Petroleum Technology, available to students upon request. Additionally, students are provided with bulletins like the "ONGC Bulletin" and "JPT Journal" to stay updated with the latest industry knowledge.

The success of the department has been shaped by the contributions of several influential individuals.

The record of Alumni of Geology & Petroleum Technology is extensive and beyond recounting here but, nonetheless, has provided a major contribution to the Oil and Gas Industry in India and abroad.

    Geological Museum

The Department of Geology has a well-furnished Geological Museum. The uniqueness of the museum is its vast collection of attractive specimens, standard size and well labelled samples. The samples are collected in the general geological tours, mapping and mining training camps, which are compulsorily a part of B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses. Some of the samples have been donated by well-known Geologists. These specimens represent almost all the major Rock formations of the country. The samples are displayed in wooden and glass showcases. The Museum samples have been classified into different sections.

This departmental museum is visited by students and faculty of all the geology departments of various colleges and universities of the country who happen to visit the Campus.

Micropaleontology in Petroleum Exploration (October 2024))

Dr. Rajshekhar delivered a guest lecture on "Micropaleontology in the Petroleum Industry," focusing on how microfossils help in petroleum exploration. He explained that microfossils, tiny remains of ancient organisms found in rocks, provide key information about the Earth’s past environments. This helps geologists understand the conditions in which oil and gas might be found.

He also emphasized the importance of stratigraphy, or the study of rock layers, in identifying potential oil reservoirs. By analyzing microfossils, geologists can better predict where to find oil.

The session ended with a Q&A, allowing students to ask about the practical use of micropaleontology in the industry.
