The Department of Geology was established in the year 1938, when it became one of the very few colleges in the country to offer the subject. Geology was introduced at F.Y.B.Sc. and S.Y.B.Sc. level in 1938 and later as a major subject for T.Y.B.Sc. in 1952.
The oil industry all over the world, especially in India, has been passing through an active phase of growth. Since 1970’s the oil industry has seen a phenomenal rise in the demand for Petroleum Products. The Government Policy decisions in the recent past have thrown open the government-run industries to the private sector, thereby attracting foreign direct investment in this sector. This has enhanced the need for trained man power, especially in the Petroleum sector. Envisaging this need for specialized man power, the Department of Geology of Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune, launched a Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Petroleum Technology in the year 1987, which in 1989, expanded to a two-year post-graduate.
This was done with a vision to be a Premier institution providing quality education to cater to the growing demand of the petroleum industry for well trained and qualified staff for both, field & Laboratory operations. The oil industry in India has been passing through an active phase of growth. Since 1970’s the oil industry has seen a phenomenal rise in all sectors of exploration and exploitation. The Asia Pacific region will be the largest consumer of Gas with almost 50% growth in demand by 2021-2025.The demand for Petroleum Products is escalating and has increased the need for finding better and more efficient ways of exploration and exploitation of Hydrocarbons. This need in the recent past has compelled the government to allow the private sector to compete there by increasing the need for trained man power.
The Department of Geology of Nowrosjee Wadia College, envisaged this need for specialized geology –based knowledge in this field and launched an interdisciplinary course in (Applied) Petroleum Technology in the year 1987. The initial success of the course, coupled with interaction with different companies in the Petroleum Industry encouraged us to expand the course in 1989 to a two year Post-graduate Degree in Petroleum Technology. Since then we have had more than thirty batches graduating successfully.
The Degree awarded is a M.Sc.(Applied) Petroleum Technology and is affiliated to the University of Pune. The blend of Technology with Geology is the essence of this course. The overwhelming response to the course and the successful placement of our students in oil companies and petroleum service companies around the world has made this course invaluable. Today, this course is recognized by UGC and ONGC for employment of the students.
The Department has a recognised Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter since 2015. The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose more than 124,800 members in 134 countries are engaged in oil and gas exploration and production. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge providing opportunities to exchange information at in-person and online events and training courses, publications, and other resources. Under the Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter, the students organize various activities throughout the year. The purpose of a Student Chapter is to supplement students’ formal education and enhance their professional development by establishing a link with the Industry Experts.
About 300 textbooks and reference books related to Geology and Petroleum Technology are available with our department and we make them available to students on demand. In addition, the department has also prescribed bulletins such as “ONGC bulletin” and “JPT Journal”, which are meant for updating knowledge of students.
A number of very influential people have moulded the history which has led to the success of this department.
The record of Alumni of Geology & Petroleum Technology is extensive and beyond recounting here but, nonetheless, has provided a major contribution to the Oil and Gas Industry in India and abroad.

The Department of Geology has a well-furnished Geological Museum. The uniqueness of the museum is its vast collection of attractive specimens, standard size and well labelled samples. The samples are collected in the general geological tours, mapping and mining training camps, which are compulsorily a part of B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses. Some of the samples have been donated by well-known Geologists. These specimens represent almost all the major Rock formations of the country. The samples are displayed in wooden and glass showcases. The Museum samples have been classified into different sections.
This departmental museum is visited by students and faculty of all the geology departments of various colleges and universities of the country who happen to visit the Campus.
The Department of Geology and Petroleum Technology has a well-organized library of its own in addition to the main library run by the college. The library has two separate sections for undergraduate and post graduate courses. The library can boast of a large volume of literature in addition to the academic reference books. The library contains a wealth of resources for the students and staff of the department.
The T.Y.B.Sc. Students and Staff underwent an extensive training at the Geological Survey of Indias Training Centre at Hyderabad.
Earth Day is an annual event organized on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org (formerly Earth Day Network) including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
To celebrate Earth Day, Department of Geology and Petroleum Technology in association with the Centre for Education and Research in Geosciences streamed a film “HOME”, by world renowned film maker Yann Arthus Bertrand.
The film HOME by Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a beautifully shot panorama of the Earth and the damage done to it by modern humanity. It includes a moving narration about the evolution of the Earth, nature, agriculture, humans, and the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degradation… of the environment, health, economic disparity, and more.
The film is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet.
All spectators had an enlightening experience.
An Industry-Academia Interaction was organized by the department on 13th April 2022.
Mr. Paul McPHILLIMY, Global Personnel Manager and Country Manager India at GEOLOG International (UAE) interacted with the students and faculty. Mr. Paul talked about the work culture of GEOLOG International and his experiences in Oil and Gas Industry.
